The holidays are over, and by the middle of January, some of you may be feeling “Santa Shock.”
The main symptoms are a house that may still be in post-holiday disarray when your credit card bills (with all those holiday gift purchases) start arriving. The result is that you may feel both tired and emotionally drained. Some people call this the January Slump.
The good news is that this is entirely curable. All you need is some good old-fashioned planning, and a little bit of self-care.
Here are three ways you can bounce back this month!
Help Your Budget Recover First!
Your financial health very much affects your physical health, your mood and even how well you sleep. One way you can start to shake off the January slump is by getting your financial house back in order.
The first step is to assess your holiday spending. Open those credit card statements and start making a payment plan for each one. Having a plan in place will help you feel better.
After your plan is in place, head over to CommonWealth One and open a holiday club savings account. Automatically saving just $50 per paycheck from now until Thanksgiving will give you more than $1,000 saved up for next year’s holiday gifts. That means your post-holiday credit card bills won’t be as high next year!
Your next step: Sign up for one of CommonWealth One’s free webinars! “Mastering Your Money: A Guide to Creating an Effective Budget” is scheduled for noon (ET) this Tuesday, January 23. You’ll get a positive emotional boost along with actionable advice on making this your best (financial) year ever! The webinar is part of a financial wellness series, so make sure to bookmark the events page on COFCU.org/events for more in the coming months!
Declutter and Reorganize
After you’ve straightened out your financial house, you can move on to your physical space. Having a disorganized or cluttered space can affect your mental health just as much as financial stress.
To ease it, make sure you’ve finished putting away all the holiday décor, cleaned out the main closet, cleaned up clutter, dusted and vacuumed. (Enlist the people who live with you to help!) Living in a clean, organized physical space will reduce your overall stress!
Prioritize Self-Care
Now that you’ve taken care of your finances and your physical space, it’s time to take care of YOU! Here are a few suggestions:
- Get outside! Even if you have to bundle up, fresh air and natural light can give you a physical and mental boost.
- Have something to look forward to! This can be a small thing like scheduling time to meet a friend for a walk, or a big thing like starting to plan your summer vacation. Either way, having something to look forward to will help energize you.
- Do something for yourself. If you have a hobby, make time to indulge in it this month. If you finished a book, go to the library and get a new one! Make time for whatever (inexpensive) thing will make you happy.
- Stop staying up so late! Establishing a regular bedtime and wake-up time, and getting at least 7 hours of sleep per night, will help you think more clearly during the day.
We hope your year is off to a great start — and these tips will help make it even better.
